The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirappalli has made notable achievements in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023. It secured the fourth rank in the Architecture category, an improvement from its previous standings. However, in the Engineering category, NIT Trichy slipped to 9th position, down from 8th in 2022. Despite this dip, the institute has shown progress in Architecture, Management, and Research rankings while maintaining its 21st position overall, consistent with 2022.
According to the NIT Trichy website, the institution was ranked 24th in India by the QS World University Rankings and 281st in the QS Asian University Rankings in 2023. However, it did not feature in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and was not listed in the NIRF Innovation category for domestic ranking. In the NIRF Engineering category, NIT Trichy secured 9th place with scores of 91.68 in Teaching, Learning, and Resources (TRL), 61.45 in Research and Professional Practice (RPC), 78.28 in Graduation Outcomes (GO), 65.86 in Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and 67.98 in Perception, all out of 100.

Established in 1964 as the Regional Engineering College through a joint initiative by the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu, NIT Tiruchirappalli is a premier institute for architecture, engineering, and management courses. Currently, it offers ten undergraduate courses, 26 postgraduate courses across various disciplines, and Ph.D. programs in all engineering departments.
